Cafe Nuga – Healthy Vegan Food in Colombo

Cafe Nuga is one of the restaurants in Colombo that offers healthy vegan food

Nuga is not a vegan restaurant but offers healthy vegan food which is labelled as vegan on the menu. They saying that their ingredients are sourced daily from local markets. Also, they never use preprocessed raw material in food preparation. So for that reason, Nuga Cafe was on my list to check their healthy vegan food.

There are vegan options on the menu and a great selection of juices and shakes with almond or soya milk options.

The waiters are not well trained (which is normal in Sri Lanka). I asked to substitute honey with trickle for one of the shakes but the waiter told me that they didn’t have trickle until I pointed out that my husband’s drink choice had trickle as an ingredient. So we both explained that we’re vegan at this point along with our vegan order. A few minutes later, non-vegan garlic bread was placed on our table by the same waiter! This is not a complaint about this particular restaurant, it’s common across Sri Lanka to have untrained but very friendly staff.

Now for all the good stuff: we ordered a rice bowl and a wrap along with an avocado smoothie and tamarind drink with the trickle instead of honey.

A rice-based dish included roasted sweet potatoes, onion, kale, crispy chickpeas and tahini. The portion was a good size and it was delicious. And I can tell you this was one of the best guilt-free restaurant food I’ve had in Sri Lanka. Both dishes were well balanced in nutrients, delicious of course, 100% plant-based and cruelty-free. (Thank you for using metal straws).

Cafe Nuga – Vegan Chocolate Cake

This is now my new favourite place for vegan food because everything offered is healthy. ….. Well except for the vegan chocolate cake that kept staring at me. I had been good all day so it was ok to have a slice. I had it with delicious ginger tea. (black tea with fresh ginger pieces)

I can’t recommend this place enough. It’s now my favourite cafe in Colombo. I still have to visit more locations to review, but I’ll be returning to Cafe Nuga.
